As a web designer I encounter all sorts of road blocks that although small, really start to add up to wasted time that I’m not getting paid enough for. The Web Developer plug for Firefox built by Chris Pederick has completely dissolved all those road blocks to make my life a whole lot easier.
Read on to get a generalized summary, review, and small tutorial on this quite amazing incredibly powerful tool.I will talk about each of the tools included with this plug in the order that it appears on the toolbar that it adds to your Firefox install.
Since there is such a large number of tools available in this plug-in, its going to take me some time to fill all of the sections out, so I am just going to do them one by one. If a section your interested in reading about isn’t filled out yet, please be patient and come back soon and eventually it will be.
DISABLE
The first category in on the toolbar is disable. I won’t go into too much detail on this one as all of the options are pretty self explanatory. But here is a quick rundown on the options in this category. Disable Cache, Disable Java, Disable Javascript, Disable Meta Redirects, Disable Minimum Font Size, Disable Page Colors, Disable Popup Blocker, Disable Proxy, Disable referrers.
For me the only option I use in this category is the Disable Minimum Font Size, but I’m sure as time goes on I will deffinitely find myself using more of them.
COOKIES
These options can help out in so many ways. Say you logged into your online banking, and close the window without logging out first, some banks (like Downey Savings) wont let you log back in until the last sessions cookies have expired. No worries, just choose clear session cookies and your good to go!
Since I’m not a programmer, I won’t find myself using these tools very often, but for programmer who is working on login systems and cookies, this is an invaluable tool.
The tools included are: Disable cookies on all pages, or just internal ones. Clear Session Cookies, Delete Domain Cookies, Delete Path Cookies, View Cookie Info, Add cookie
CSS
Now these options are worth their weight in gold. There is hardly a day that goes by that I don’t use one of the options in this category.
For a web designer that works with CSS constantly this is a must have set of tools. You can instantly choose to be shown the entire CSS for the page without having to go to view the source to find the URL to the CSS styles page. You can also enable View Style Information and where ever you move your mouse on the page, a red box will outline all the different styles that are coded on the page, and then provide you with the associated styles in a frame that pops up below the page.
The tools included are: Disable Styles, Display CSS by Media Type, View CSS, View Style Information, Add User Style Sheet, Edit CSS, & User Border Box Model
